The Dowager Is In!

Sometimes I feel at least a hundred years older than I really am.  For example, there are the aches and pains that follow shoveling.  There have been a lot of those lately, but I'm so tired of complaining about the snow that I don't even want to go there.  Maybe if I ignore the whole topic it will go away.

Then there's the issue of violent video games, texting, and the internet in general.  I'm such a Luddite.  I drive a standard shift car and use a fountain pen when I can get my hands on one.  I don't have a "smart phone", which I guess means I have a "stupid phone" but to tell you the truth, I don't care about that either as long as one of my sons gets back to me eventually (even with a text message).  I am Sick.To.Death. of watching everyone going through life "plugged in", ignoring their company at restaurants, their children at the playground, and the rest of the universe on the subway.  I don't care if it's a cell phone, an i Pad, or an e-book, shut them off once in a while and LOOK UP, PEOPLE!  There is a WORLD out here!

But what is making me feel old at the moment (besides my creaky right knee and the twenty...OK, thirty pounds I should shed) are the current nominees for the Academy Awards.  I went to see "The Wolf of Wall Street."  Good God.  If I had known going in what I was in for I would have worn a trench coat, a hat, and sunglasses.  I never thought of myself as a prude, but come on, guys!  If I wanted to watch porn I'd rent "Debbie Does Dallas" (which was funnier than I thought it would be, but then I'm remembering my 20's and there was a lot of wine involved).  But REALLY?  I don't care if "that's the way things are in the concrete jungle".  I don't care how "accurate" it is.  I couldn't wait to get out of the theater.  Last night we tried "American Hustle" which looked like "Bambi" in comparison.  OK, I didn't follow every plot twist, but that may have been due to the odd "nap-let" when my chin starts heading for my chest, but only for a moment.  Or two.

I've resisted watching "Downton Abbey", but I'm beginning to think it's time to re-think that.  Now where's my hat and my cup of Earl Grey?

GLAD YOU"RE BACK! "Edge" withdrawal anxiety was interfering with my yoga vibe.
MW . . .AMEN SISTER!!!! I don't facebook, tweet, or text on my stupid phone either. I'm freakin tired of hearing that my choice NOT to walk around with an appliance makes me a dinosaur. When companions pull out a device to check something (not an emergency), I feel as if I'm with juveniles who believe demonstrating how their new toys work will be engaging for us both. REALLY? Could we look at the slides from your summer vacation next? Hey, techy: look up "captivating" on that i-passifier. Hint: your photo working your new "toy" is not there.
BTW , rarely do I hear the CO$T of these upgrades mentioned.
MW . .
to restore your movie- going heart, DO see PHILOMENA and NEBRASKA. Dench and Dern should win, but won't.
They probably don't tweet either.
Disheartened that THE BUTLER was overlooked. Forest Whitakker was wonderful. But the film was released too early for evaporating the national attention span. (see plugged rant above- mine and yours.)
BTW . . rethink Downton Abbey, a delicious soap opera with taste, solid acting and attention to details. Maggie Smith is worth the price of admission (and less than an iPad)
Stay strong . And opt for tea with a friend whose cell phone is OFF while she actually talks to you.
Bet you already do.

Watch Endeavour - Start with the pilot.... delicious mystery where the victim is done and gone before the action gets underway, scenery is glorious, characters terrific - No angst, just mellow....and Downton is lovely as well - Highclere Castle was my brothers favorite stately home and garden when they lived in the UK - YES - I love that technology puts so much at my fingertips, but I'll keep my dumb phone, cry whenever my work program gets an update that isn't as streamlined and user-friendly as the original, and am married to a former nuke engineer who HATES it all - won't do e-mail, just up-graded his 16 yr old gateway for a system that adds hours to his formerly simple process of paying bills and printing checks - And don't get him going on the move to electronic records in medicine - As if we didn't know how to get and keep 99% of people healthy - diet, exercise, laughter, moderation, routine testing.....without 10,000 new expanded codes and prompts - Be warm.....

Relieved your back was worried you'd gave up or were buried under the snow. We have had mild temp 8-10 but lots of rain I may wake up some morning and this island will be parked next to Boston. that'd be good. Last week i was out with my daughters & grandaughters 9 of us
I was telling Patsy that we took a picture at the table, he replied
'was there a photographer there'!! I laughted NO ' did you have a camera with you'- how out of touch ! he does turn 70 on Saturday God love him but somehow I would like to be back to the photographers days when people cherised a rare photo , and selfies and photobombing were nowhere in our realm. welcome back
